Information for Current Scholars

Faculty Advisors: Sergi Elizalde and Peter Mucha

Professor Sergi Elizalde, currently Chair of the Department of Mathematics, is a Byrne Scholars advisor and can provide information on research opportunities. He is also the House Professor of East Wheelock House.

Professor Peter Mucha, Jack Byrne Distinguished Professor in Mathematics, is a Byrne Scholars advisor and can provide information on research opportunities. He arrived at Dartmouth in 2021 as part of the Jack Byrne Academic Cluster in Mathematics and Decision Science.

If you are interested in working a research project at another college or university, either in the U.S. or abroad, please contact Professors Elizalde and Mucha, who can provide more details and perhaps put you in touch with a research group. This type of travel can be done during a leave term. (Unlike programs organized through Dartmouth, you would make the arrangements yourself, and then the Byrne funds would reimburse up to \$5000.)

Resources, support, and communication

As a Byrne Scholar, you may use up to \$5000 per year (up to a total of \$15,000 during your time at Dartmouth) for enrichment activities such as research, internships, or attending conferences. The application form is below under Request Funding.

Allison Zhuang ’25 has offered to be a mentor for the incoming Byrne Scholars. Feel free to reach out to her with any questions about the program or about Dartmouth for which you want to hear a student’s perspective.

All scholars are members of the email group byrne_scholars@math.dartmouth.edu which we will use to inform you of news, events, and opportunities.

We hope you join our informal lunches and dinners where everyone can meet each other and talk about recent projects. We usually have these once per term. In addition, you are very welcome to organize other informal Byrne gatherings, whether they involve a mathematical activity or are just social gatherings to get to know each other. Professors Elizalde and Mucha can assist with coordination and there are budget funds available to cover pizza, snacks, etc.

Finally, you are welcome to use the Byrne Scholars study room Kemeny 100C, which is off the Byrne Commons at the end of the hallway of Kemeny past the admin offices. You will need to stop by the Math admin offices to sign out a key for this room (this applies to all Byrne scholars, since the room recently changed). Kindly be respectful of this space which the department graciously provides, and please keep the door to 100C locked at all times
